The community we are part of today has been built on the hard work of our senior Australians.
Today’s seniors have made a tremendous contribution to the life and prosperity we enjoy and they play crucial roles in our communities, families and civic life in the Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains and Nepean.
I believe we have a duty as a nation to ensure that every older Australian in our community can age well – with the respect, support and opportunities they deserve.
The Albanese Labor Government respects the enormous contribution older Australians have made and continue to make and Labor believes that you deserve a fulfilling and secure retirement. That’s why we’re working hard to protect your pension, improve aged care, strengthen Medicare and ease cost of living pressures.
Since coming to government we’ve raised the full single rate of the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment by more than $5000.
We’ve helped more than 44,000 self-funded retirees get, and keep, the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card so they’re able to access cheaper medicines and bulk-billed doctor visits.
We’ve also made workforce participation easier by changing the pension Work Bonus so older Australians who want to work keep more of their pension.
By providing the largest increase in rent assistance in over 30 years, we’ve helped around 500,000 pensioners who are renting, and for home-owners, extending the assets test exemption for principal home proceeds has helped more than 26,000 pensioners and other income support recipients to downsize when they’re ready.
The new Aged Care Act we introduced in 2025 enshrines the rights of older Australians in law and creates a system designed to deliver safe, dignified and high-quality care for an ageing population.
The $4.3 billion Support at Home program delivers a higher level of care, keeping older people connected to the communities and places they love.
For those in residential aged care homes, and their families, there’s more peace of mind with a registered nurse onsite more than 99% of the time, able to respond and deliver more direct care for over 250,000 older people.
